Best Practices Against Cyber Attacks

Best Ways to Prevent Cyber Attacks

1. Strong Passwords

- It is easy to select the same password for every account but this makes it easier for cybercrime to occur. The shorter the password the easier it is to crack. Utilize tools like LastPass to generate passwords for you to be stored in the vault. We recommend using a long password of 12 characters at minimum with a mix of numbers, symbols, and capital and lower-case letters. A reminder the easier it is for you could be just as easy for a cybercriminal to take the time and generate your own password with LastPass.

2. Identifying Email Phishing and Company Standards

- Phishing is usually done through email, ads, or by sites that look like sites, you already use or people you already talk to. For example, someone who is phishing might send you an email that looks like it is from your colleague or boss asking for money or information. Phishing emails or sites might ask for:

  • Usernames and passwords, including password changes
  • Social Security numbers
  • Bank account numbers
  • PINs (Personal Identification Numbers)
  • Credit card numbers
  • Your mother’s maiden name
  • Your birthday

- Report all phishing attempts to Support@eoiservice.com

- Always examine the email closely. It is easier to find suspicious emails when you are able to find key standards. Our company has key identifiers like a company signature and a standard email address which are easily identifiable. This will include our domain @eoiservice.com at the end of a send mailing address. Ex: sjefferson@eoiservice.com. Please review the example below of how to identify phishing.

3. Check before Clicking on Links

- Links can easily be disguised as something they're not so it's best to double-check before you click on a hyperlink. On Chrome Browser, you can see the target URL by hovering over the link. Do this check links before clicking on them to make sure it is going to the correct site. Look for key items that may relate to an actual website.

Can you spot the difference between the links?

- In the example above it may say sign into your account but as you hover the cursor over the hyperlink it is showing the true path of the URL. Even though both emails are the same the link in one is safe while the other is not. Always check before you click.

4. Always check for Google Chrome Updates

- Google Chrome is the main browser that EOI Utilizes. Chrome is constantly updating its browser with new security features and interface adjustments. Chrome can auto-update on its own but this can only occur if the device fully shut down and reboots. A computer that is placed in sleep mode or never allowed to fully shut down can fall behind on updates. Falling behind on chrome updates can lead to issues with the browser and the device itself. Please use the documents below to check how to update Google Chrome Manually.

5. Avoid Public Network

- It is easy to want to utilize public wifi for ease of convenience, but it is unchallenging for cybercriminals to compromise public WiFi. If a user accesses a compromised network information like login credentials, emails, and files can be intercepted. We recommend always using a secure private network when working remotely or reaching out to support@eoiservice.com for best practices.
